“Our website feels old” is the most common thing we hear before a project starts. But that one sentence can mean two very different jobs: a redesign, or a full rebuild. Getting this wrong means either overspending on something a fresh coat of paint could've fixed, or patching a site that needed to be torn down and started over.
Here's how to actually tell which one you need.
When a redesign is enough
A redesign keeps the underlying structure — the pages, the content, often the platform — and changes how it looks and feels. This is usually the right call when:
The site works fine technically. Pages load, forms submit, nothing is broken. The problem is purely visual: it looks dated, the layout feels cramped, or the branding has moved on since the site was built. You're not adding major new functionality — booking systems, e-commerce, member logins — just presenting what's already there better.
When you need a full rebuild
A rebuild starts from the ground up — new codebase, often a new platform, sometimes a new information architecture entirely. This is usually necessary when:
The site is slow no matter what you do to it, because the way it was originally built can't support fixes without breaking something else. You need functionality the current platform simply can't handle — custom booking flows, integrations, dashboards. Or the site was built on a platform or by a developer nobody has access to anymore, and every small change takes longer and costs more than it should.
The honest way to tell the difference
Ask this: if a developer opened the back end right now, would they be able to work with what's there, or would they spend more time working around it than building on it? If it's the second one, a redesign is just delaying the rebuild you'll need in a year anyway.
The good news is you don't have to guess. A short technical review — checking load times, the platform it's built on, and how the code is structured — usually makes the answer obvious within a day, before any money is spent on the wrong fix.
